Biophysics in Salamanca: Can Biophysics Explain Life?

3/24/2026
Instituto de Biología Funcional y Genómica (IBFG, CSIC/USAL)
Salamanca, Spain

This event is designed as an engaging introduction to how biophysics helps us understand living systems.

We will begin with three short talks that introduce key concepts and techniques in modern biophysics: “Lights, Cameras, and Action” , “Macromolecules in 3D: The Design of Life”, and “Protein Dates: Biophysics to Measure Molecular Affinities”. After the talks, we will perform a live demonstration of optical tweezers.

We will conclude with a pizza party, providing an informal space to continue conversations.

Biophysics Week in Lithuania

3/23/2026 - 3/27/26
Vilnius University
Vilnius, Lithuania

The Lithuanian Biophysical continues its tradition of organizing public outreach events across universities and research institutions in Vilnius and Kaunas, Lithuania’s largest cities. This year’s program features a record number of public lectures, laboratory tours and practical activities highlighting diverse subfields of biophysics thriving in Lithuania. While the primary audience is high-school and undergraduate students, the events are open to everyone interested in science. In collaboration with STEAM centres across the country, high-school students will also have the opportunity to perform a practical activity exploring the interplay between photosynthesis and respiration in plants.

Mass Photometry – Theory and Practical Applications

3/24/2026 - 3/25/226
Faculty of Chemical and Pharmacuetical Sciences, University of Chile
Region Metropolitana, Chile

Mass photometry is a relatively new single molecule approach to investigate biomolecular interactions that is quickly becoming a research “gold standard”. Its simplicity allows for a range of questions to be explored and also a powerful tool to support other structural biology methodologies. Features of the technique allow us to observe and quantify all populations of molecules within a sample, meaning rare species and inteactions can be explored that may not be available with other methods. Now at the University of Chile, we have one of only two mass photometers in Latino America. This course will explain the theoretical concepts behind the technology and introduce attendees to the types of studies that can be performed with mass photometry. Using a combination of oral presentations, practical demonstrations and group discussions this course will encourage students to consider how they can develop their current research and/or design new projects with mass photometry.

Synergizing Biophysics Education and Research: Enhancing Mentorship for Africa’s Scientific Future

3/23/2026 - 3/27/2026
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Uganda) & Kyambogo University, MCU Boardroom (Uganda)
Kakamega, Kenya

Biophysics holds immense potential to address Africa’s pressing challenges in health, agriculture, energy, and technology. The growth of Biophysics on the continent has been limited by gaps in education, research infrastructure, and mentorship. “Synergizing Biophysics Education and Research: Enhancing Mentorship for Africa’s Scientific Future” emphasizes the integration of robust academic training with cutting-edge research, supported by strong mentorship networks. By fostering collaboration between educators, researchers, and mentors, this initiative seeks to inspire the next generation of African biophysicists, strengthen research capacity, and ensure that biophysics knowledge is effectively applied to local and global needs. Ultimately, it aims to build a sustainable ecosystem where education, research, and mentorship work hand in hand to advance Africa’s scientific and technological future.
