BETHESDA, MD – Vasanthi Jayaraman has been elected President-elect of the Biophysical Society (BPS). She will assume the office of President-elect at the 2027 BPS Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in February.
Jayaraman is a professor and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Madras University, India and a PhD in chemistry at Princeton University. Jayaraman has dedicated her time toward service to the biophysics community; evidenced through her years spent volunteering for the Biophysical Society Council, committees, editorial boards, and ultimately as the Editor-In-Chief of the Biophysical Journal.
“As much as I have dedicated my career to understanding how protein structure and dynamics govern function, I am as equally dedicated to the Society that has been my home for the past two decades. During my term as President, my vision for our community will be to build upon these strong foundations while positioning us for the future of science,” said Jayaraman. “I believe it is critical for us to advocate on behalf of science and rebuild the trust and support that we have long held with the public. We must also rededicate ourselves to support researchers around the world throughout all stages of their careers. Our path forward, now more than ever, must be together.”
Harpreet Singh from The Ohio State University, USA has been elected as the next Secretary of the Biophysical Society. He will shadow the current Secretary and will officially take over duties when his 4-year term begins on July 1, 2027.
Four Society members were also elected to serve on Council. They are:

Aurelia Honerkamp-Smith, Lehigh University, USA
Sharonda LeBlanc, North Carolina State University, USA
Christopher M. Yip, University of Toronto, Canada
Each will serve a three-year term, beginning on February 23, 2027.
