This Biophysics Week, we're highlighting some of the outstanding members of our Student Chapter program. Today, we'll hear from Benjamin Boone, a 2nd year Biology major at the Biophysical Society Student Chapter at ETSU.
What inspired you to study biophysics?
I was inspired to study biophysics because I survived brain cancer at age ten, an experience that made me deeply curious about how the body works at its most fundamental levels. Ever since, I’ve been drawn to the science behind healing and the physical principles that keep cells alive and systems functioning.
What do you think makes the study of biophysics unique?
One of the most useful skills I’ve developed is the ability to break complex problems into clear, manageable steps. It’s a way of thinking that helps far beyond science whether I’m organizing tasks, communicating with others, or tackling something unfamiliar, that structured approach makes everything feel more doable.
What skill have you learned in your studies that you find useful in other aspects of your life?
One of the most useful skills I’ve developed is the ability to break complex problems into clear, manageable steps. It’s a way of thinking that helps far beyond science whether I’m organizing tasks, communicating with others, or tackling something unfamiliar, that structured approach makes everything feel more doable.
What is your dream career?
My dream career is to become an oncologist, using science and compassion to guide patients through some of the hardest moments of their lives. Having survived brain cancer myself, I’m driven to give others the same hope and support that helped me keep going.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of maintaining a 4.0 GPA while actively doing research, because it shows the work ethic I’ve built over time. It’s also deeply meaningful to me on a personal level it reminds me that brain cancer didn’t hold me back academically and that I’m capable of achieving more than I once thought possible.
What advice do you have for someone thinking about studying biophysics?
If you’re thinking about studying biophysics, give it a shot and don’t let the size of the field intimidate you. It’s such a broad, fascinating area that there’s truly something in it for everyone, no matter what part of science sparks your curiosity.
