2024 Biopolymers in vivo Subgroup

The purpose of this Subgroup is to create a forum to discuss biophysical properties and function of biomolecules in cells and cell-like conditions, and to develop experimental and computational approaches to study these phenomena. The Subgroup invites participants from all scientific disciplines with an interest in broadening our understanding of biophysical processes in cells, using approaches ranging from biophysical studies of biomolecules in vitro and in silico to experiments performed in living cells and beyond. We believe that this is a timely and emerging field of high importance for all aspects of biophysics.

Although biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids are the workhorses of the cell, our knowledge about how they behave in cells is limited. One reason for this shortcoming is that the microenvironments inside cells and in cell membranes (and in extracellular spaces of multi-cellular organisms) are extremely complex, with macromolecules together occupying as much as 40% of volume but with the composition of macromolecules highly heterogeneous and constantly changing.

The name of this Subgroup, "Biopolymers in vivo," was voted and approved at the 2011 BPS Meeting. We will continue to host a business meeting, host a Subgroup dinner, administer the BIV Young Faculty award, and organize a symposium on the Saturday before the Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society. Everyone is encouraged to become a member of this Subgroup and to attend the Subgroup’s Saturday events.

2024 Channels Receptors & Transporters Subgroup

The Channels Receptors & Transporters Subgroup (formerly The Membrane Biophysics Subgroup) promotes the exchange of ideas and information pertaining to the study of biological membranes. Subgroup members pursue research in a variety of areas including the structure, function and regulation of channels and transporters, ligand-receptor interactions, signal transduction mechanisms, protein trafficking and secretory mechanisms. Each year the Subgroup sponsors a symposium highlighting an area of membrane biophysics. The symposium is followed by a dinner at which the K.S. Cole Award in Membrane Biophysics is presented to a person who is deemed to have made seminal contributions to the field, followed by a short address by the recipient. Membership in the Subgroup is open to all members of the Biophysical Society.

2024 Membrane Fusion, Fission & Traffic Subgroup

The mission of Membrane Fusion, Fission & Traffic Subgroup (formerly Exocytosis & Endocytosis Subgroup) is to further the understanding of the basic mechanisms of exocytosis and endocytosis. Research in this area has advanced rapidly in the last few years, owing to the convergence of a number of formerly distinct disciplines and the invention of new methods for high-resolution, real-time monitoring of exocytosis and endocytosis. Details of the machinery for sensing intracellular calcium elevation and for fusion of the vesicle and plasma membranes are gradually emerging. Our Subgroup seeks to accelerate progress by facilitating exchange of ideas and collaborations. We organize a yearly symposium in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society, and the symposium is followed by a dinner and a mixer. The Subgroup has consolidated and sponsors the Bernard Katz Award, which recognizes outstanding scientific careers in the field of exocytosis and endocytosis.

2024 Nanoscale Approaches to Biology Subgroup

The Nanoscale Approaches to Biology Subgroup (formerly Nanoscale Biophysics Subgroup) has been covering single-molecule biophysics, super-resolution imaging, nanoparticles and nanodevices since 2010, with a focus on the development of new biophysical methods and instrumentation, and their application to current biophysical questions. The Subgroup aims to advance the field of nanoscale biophysics through the exchange of information, ideas, and innovative techniques operating at the scale of nanometers to tens of nanometers, and by uniting participants at the interface of scientific disciplines from biophysics to physics, chemistry, and beyond. We promise that you will return home with at least one new idea! Each year, the Subgroup sponsors a symposium highlighting exciting advances in biophysics on the nanometer scale. The symposium is followed by a networking event: cocktails and a light dinner.
