BETHESDA, MD – The Biophysical Society is pleased to announce that William A. Eaton, of the National Institute Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health, USA, has been named the recipient of the 2027 BPS Award in the Biophysics of Health and Disease. Eaton will be honored at the Society’s 71st Annual Meeting, being held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from February 20-24, 2027.

Eaton will receive the Award in the Biophysics of Health and Disease for revolutionizing our biophysical understanding of the molecular pathogenesis and drug therapy for sickle cell disease.

“William’s training, as both a physician and a chemical physicist/spectroscopist, has given him a unique insight into questions surrounding the research and discovery of disease such as sickle cell anemia. His

extraordinary experiments have drawn surprising conclusions and novel treatments for patients,” said BPS President Karen Fleming of Johns Hopkins University. “His high-impact work exemplifies the groundbreaking achievements the Biophysics of Health and Disease Award seeks to recognize.”

About the Award – The Award in the Biophysics of Health and Disease honors an investigator who has made a significant contribution to understanding the fundamental cause or pathogenesis of disease, or to enabling treatment or prevention.
