The discovery of the Orai proteins in 2006, and their identification as the pore-forming components of certain highly Ca2+-selective, agonist-activated Ca2+ entry channels has resulted in a wealth of publications characterizing their properties and regulation (>170 listed to date in PubMed). Inevitably, given the relatively recent nature of this breakthrough, several controversies and contradictions exist in the field – a feature that is likely to make for a lively and highly engaged meeting. A specific aim of the proposed program is a deliberate attempt to emphasize younger researchers among the invited speakers, rather than the perceived ‘leaders’ in the field. The hope is that this will: (a) provide an opportunity for people who may not always get the chance to present in this format, yet who are undoubtedly producing some of the more interesting and original work, and (b) to hopefully generate a more open discussion and debate among this group, as well as encourage more younger scientists to enter this rapidly expanding field. Although the selected speakers all fall into this ‘younger researcher’ category, they are all independent scientists, running their own research groups and publishing as senior authors.
