Weather

July is the warmest and one of the sunniest months in Riga, Latvia, characterized by very mild to warm days, cool nights, and moderate rainfall. It is considered peak season, with average high temperatures around 71°F–74°F (22°C–23°C) and lows of 54°F–57°F (12°C–14°C). The average daily temperature in November is in the low to mid 60°F (16-18°C) with a mixture of sunshine and rain, depending on the region. Check the current local forecast here.

Pack for warm, sunny days (T-shirts, shorts) but include a light jacket, hoodie, or layers for cooler evenings. A raincoat or umbrella is recommended for occasional showers.

 

Currency

The official currency in Latvia is the Euro. Click here for currency conversion. Major credit cards (such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) are widely accepted in Riga, and contactless payments (such as Apple Pay and Google Pay) are becoming more popular.  However, carrying some cash, especially smaller bills, is recommended for street vendors, informal markets, tips, and traveling in rural areas.  If needed, ATMs are the easiest way to withdraw cash from your home account.  Be sure to inform your bank before traveling abroad and be aware that there may be fees charged for cash withdrawals.  It is advisable to exchange some cash before traveling to Latvia. 

 

Electricity

In Latvia the power outlets are Type C (Europlug) and Type F (Schuko). The standard voltage is 230 Volts and the standard frequency is 50 Hertz. If you travel with a device that does not accept 230 Volts and 50 Hertz, you will need to bring a voltage converter with you. You may also need a plug adapter if your appliance's plug has a different shape.

 

Attractions

House of the Blackheads (Melngalvju nams)
The House of the Blackheads is among Riga's top sights, located in the heart of Old Riga, near the Town Hall Square, facing the Riga City Council. The house is very deservedly called grand and royal, and it is a must-see for every city guest.

St. Peter's Church
The tallest church in the city, offering a 123-meter-high bell tower with panoramic views of the Old Town, river, and cityscape.

Old Town Riga (Vecrīga)
The Old Town Riga is the oldest part of our capital city, it is a city center, as well as a favorite place for recreation and entertainment for tourists. Two of the most impressive buildings in Old Riga are the Dome Church and St. Peter's Church. Wandering through the Old Town is easily one of the most memorable things to do in Riga.

Riga Central Market
Housed in five former German Zeppelin hangers, Riga Central Market is one of the larges markets in Europe, offering a wide array of local food and goods. It is one of the most notable structures from the 20th century in Latvia and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 1998.

Freedom Monument
The Freedom Monument is a monument located in Riga, Latvia, honouring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. It is considered an important symbol of the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Latvia.

Latvian National Museum of History
The Latvian National Museum of Art is an art museum in Riga, Latvia. It contains the largest collection of national art in Latvia. The museum houses more than 65,000 works of art reflecting the development of professional art in the Baltic area and in Latvia from the middle of the 18th century until the present time.
