International Travel Grant


Submission Deadline has passed.

To assist students and a small number of more senior scientists, the Biophysical Society and IUPAB have limited funds available for travel fellowships to the 2008 Joint Meeting of the Biophysical Society and the IUPAB International Congress. Each award may be applied towards roundtrip airfare to the Meeting. The purpose of these travel fellowships is to foster and initiate further interaction among biophysicists and scientists working in countries experiencing financial difficulties.

The following eligibility requirements must be met:

  • The applicant is performing research in countries experiencing financial constraints.

  • The applicant should be the presenting author.

  • The following materials are required at time of on line submission by each applicant:

    1. Copy of the abstract submitted for presentation at the Meeting. 

    2. A short (1 page) Curriculum Vitae containing the most relevant publications and description of current research interests and goals. 

    3. A list of any previous meetings attended and sources of support. 

    4. A request for partial or total support and rationale for request.

    5. Students: Two letters from sponsors who are familiar with the student's research progress.
      Senior Scientists: A self-written letter outlining the importance of such an award if granted.

Please note, because this is a travel award, applicants must be present at the meeting in order to receive their award. 

 

 


International Visiting Graduate Student Travel Grant 


To assist non-US Graduate Students, the Biophysical Society has limited funds available for travel fellowships to visit labs of Biophysical Society Regular Members. The purpose of these fellowships is to foster and initiate further interaction between established biophysicists around the world and scientists working in countries experiencing financial difficulties.

Eligibility: 

  • Applicant must reside in country experiencing financial need.

  • Short visit of a graduate student (1-3 months) to an established lab to
    acquire skills to apply to PhD thesis in the country of residence.

  • Quality of the facility and research to be undertaken.

  • Support only for receipted costs of travel of the student.

  • Laboratories involved will be responsible for living expenses.

  • Responsible person in receiving laboratory should be Biophysical Society member or willing to join.

Application documents:

  • Application letter containing information on all the above aspects.

  • Biographical sketch of applicant (2 page maximum)

  • Biographical sketch of PI of receiving laboratory.

  • Letters of acceptance of receiving laboratory and letter from Ph.D thesis advisor describing the skill(s) that will be learned and student qualifications. Both letters should state how the living expenses will be paid.

At the end of the stay, the awardee should send a summary statement to the Biophysical Society describing the skills acquired and their use towards PhD thesis. The awardee will receive in addition to the travel award, a complimentary 1 year membership to the Biophysical Society.

International Grants for Courses in Countries in Need


The purpose of these grants is to promote and facilitate the organization of and attendance to practical biophysical courses in countries experiencing financial need. Funds are provided for workshops and meetings organized by Society members, which are held in countries in need or in nearby countries where organizers will use funds to select students from countries in need.

Requests for support will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Funds should be used to support students in countries in need

  • Frontier theme of workshop

  • Biophysics program

  • Excellence and productivity of proposed speakers

  • Number of students

  • Balance between international and local speakers

  • Matching funds

  • Facilities

Application should contain information on all these aspects. Deadline for submissions are: February 1 and August 1 of each year. Approval will usually be November and February of each year. Priority will be given to requests made by Biophysical Society members.
