Educational
Activities of the Society
The
Biophysical Society supports a number of activities related to education
in biophysics. These activities include this website and activities
at the Annual Meeting including the Student Symposium with an undergraduate
poster presentation, the Student Research Achievement Award, the Emily
M. Gray Award, as well as special purpose workshops on topics broadly related
to biophysics education.
Education
Website: An educational resource
on the web for the informed general public, science students, science educators,
and biophysics professionals.
Student
Symposium: An educational symposium
on biophysics offered at the Annual Meeting and designed to introduce college
and university students to biophysics research. All local students
from colleges and universities within ~100 miles of the meeting site are
offered free one-day admission to the Meeting, a free one year membership
in the Society, an Annual Meeting T-shirt as well as special introductory
level seminars on selected topics in biophysics.
Undergraduate
Poster Presentations: All undergraduates
attending the Annual Meeting or the Student Symposium are invited to present
posters describing their research. This event occurs in conjunction
with the Student Symposium.
Student
Research Achievement Award (SRAA):
Graduate students are invited to submit their research posters to the SRAA
competition at the time they are submitted for presentation at the Annual
Meeting. Winners, chosen from each of about 8 different topic areas,
receive a monetary award as well as personal recognition at the Annual
Meeting Awards Presentation that precedes the national lecture.
The
Emily M. Gray Award: The Biophysical
Society presents an annual award to recognize efforts to promote biophysics
education. This award is named for the first executive director of
the Society, Emily M. Gray. Activate this link to see a list of the
Emily M. Gray Awardees.
Specialized
workshops: Specialized workshops and
symposia on specific topics in biophysical education broadly defined are
offered at the Annual Meeting. Various standing committees of the
Society typically sponsor these events.
Education
Committee of the Society
The Education Committee,
a standing committee of the Biophysical Society, “is responsible for providing
materials and ideas to be used in advertising biophysics to the general
public and particularly to students.
The Committee plans and
executes brochures and educational programs at the Annual Meeting, and
at other opportunities. A program involving students and teachers
from local high schools and colleges should be organized at each Annual
Meeting (1988, first Student Symposium).” Terms of Education Committee
members run from July to June and are typically for a period of three years.
The current members of the Education Committee with their terms of office
and contact information are available on the
Education
Committee Page.
