Biophysical Society Summer Course: Case Studies in the Physics of Life

The Biophysical Society Summer Course is an 11-week scholarship program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that introduces undergraduate minority students to the field of biophysics. The program includes lectures, seminars, lab work, team-building activities, and field trips. Upon successful completion, students receive three course credits toward an undergraduate degree. This course is designed to reflect a graduate-level research program. Stipend for living expenses is provided.

Students with a strong quantitative background in basic or applied sciences are encouraged to apply.

Course includes

Participants receive:

  • Paid tuition
  • Paid room & board
  • Textbooks
  • Travel Grant
  • Stipend for living expenses
     

Prerequisites:

  • Studying quantitative science: chemistry, physics, biochemistry, computer science
  • 1 semester of biology (strongly recommended, not required)
  • 2 semesters of calculus-level physics
  • 3.0 cumulative or higher GPA in science courses
  • Must be a minority* undergraduate student residing permanently in the U.S. or citizen of U.S., or Canadian aboriginal undergraduate student

*Eligible individuals from groups underrepresented in the biomedical research enterprise of this Nation. These individuals include but are not limited to: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives and citizens of the U. S. Pacific Islands. Gender is not a criterion.
